Rent.it now allows you to rent a car in Italy with debit, bank or prepaid cards with some companies.

On Rent.it, you can now rent cars in Italy even without a credit card , using, for example , a debit card, Visa or Mastercard, or a prepaid Visa or Mastercard. Cards must be in the owner's name, which must match the name of the person who will be the rental agreement holder and the primary driver of the car.

How does it work?

Generally , a credit card in the name of the main driver is always required for car rentals. Now, thanks to some select car rental companies , you can also use debit cards, Visa or Mastercard debit cards, and Visa or Mastercard prepaid cards with the cardholder's name printed on them. The main thing to know is that to rent with debit cards and Visa or Mastercard prepaid cards, you must purchase insurance to cancel or reduce deductibles ; this option will therefore be automatically included when booking. A debit card (either VISA or MASTERCARD, with the cardholder's name printed on it (a signature on the back is not sufficient) and the word "DEBIT" written on it) can also be used at the same rates as traditional credit card rentals, at suppliers that allow this option.

A security deposit will be charged to your registered Visa or Mastercard debit/prepaid card (unauthorized, as is the case with credit cards) . Since all insurance is included, it will typically range between €300 and €600 depending on the rental group (this amount is indicated for each individual vehicle). The security deposit will then be refunded via bank transfer . To this end, the customer must provide their IBAN and BIC/SWIFT codes when picking up the vehicle.

If you rent with a VISA DEBIT or MASTERCARD DEBIT card in your name, the deposit will be authorized at the beginning of the rental and then released at the end.

IMPORTANT : To ensure you're booking the right vehicle, use the filters in the car search results to narrow down your search. Under " Card used for rental" you must select " Prepaid Card or Debit Card" if you're renting with a prepaid Visa or Mastercard in your name, or a debit card in your name from the MAESTRO or PAGOBANCOMAT circuit. Select " Debit Card" if you're renting with a debit card in your name from VISA or MASTERCARD. What documents are required?

The card used when collecting the vehicle must have the following data printed on it:

name of the owner (mandatory)
Card IBAN (for prepaid cards)

In addition to the debit/cash card/prepaid card, the customer must present:

original and valid driving license
original photo ID (ID card, passport)
return flight ticket (mandatory in case of rental with a nominative prepaid card or nominative debit card) .

As a result, rentals of this type are almost exclusively available at airport offices, and rental companies expressly prohibit residents of the pickup location from making this type of rental.

It's important to note that the vehicle will be rented with a named debit card, named debit card, or named prepaid card, at the sole discretion of the rental agent. The rental agent reserves the right to refuse the vehicle if the customer's qualifications are deemed insufficient. This may also apply to rentals with a credit card if the rental agent deems the customer's guarantees insufficient.
